Randwick Project P 37/5661-5664, 5787, 5883-5884, 6756 & M 37/1163 & 1173 (Birimian Gold 100%) Introduction
The Randwick project is composed of seven granted prospecting licenses, namely P 37/5661-5664, 5787, 5884 & 6756 and two mining lease applications (M 37/1163 & 1173), that cover an area of 1233 hectares. The tenements overlie the interpreted northern strike extensions of the structure that hosts the Randwick-Anglo Saxon gold workings and surround these workings to both the west and north (see Figure 2.1). Location & Access The Randwick Project is located 670 kilometres to the northeast of Perth in Western Australia. The tenement package is 40 kilometres to the northeast of Leonora (see Figure B) and is accessed via the Leonora-Laverton road, and then via pastoral station tracks and mining haul roads. Previous Exploration Exploration of the Randwick project has been predominantly for gold. The area was initially explored and mined at the beginning of the 20th century, when the workings at 'Queen Mary' and 'Anglo Saxon' were operated (see Figure 2.1). In more recent times various groups have explored the project area. In 1977 Western Mining Corporation (WMC) explored an area that covered the eastern project area. WMC undertook a programme of rock chip sampling, however no locations were given for this work. Aztec Exploration Ltd undertook a limited costeaning in the northern portions of P 37/5662 & 5884, in 1983. The assays generated from these samples were deemed, at that time, to be not sufficiently encouraging to continue exploration. BP Minerals Ltd began exploration of the southeastern project area in 1985, in the area now covered by P 37/5664, 5787, 5884 & 6756. Exploration included rock chipping, soil sampling and some RAB drilling. Initial rock chipping returned results of up to 0.53 gpt Au from the historical workings. Soil sampling was undertaken in 1987, on 240 x 40 metre centres, however due to the alluvial/colluvial cover, the results from this work were poor. RAB drilling was undertaken in 1988 and targeted the extensions to the Anglo Saxon shear system. This drilling returned results of up to 8m @ 0.24 gpt Au, however no resampling or follow up drilling was undertaken (see Figure 2.2). An RC drilling programme was undertaken by an unknown party around 1990, and consisted of a six hole programme in the vicinity of the BP Minerals RAB drilling. This drilling was later resampled by prospector B. Legendre in 1991 and showed some promising results, in particular BRC 006 yielded a result of 5m @ 1.06 gpt Au. This drilling was undertaken on the southern boundary of P 37/5884 (see Figure 2.2) has yet to be followed up. The next phase of exploration was begun by Normandy Exploration Ltd in the mid 1990s. Normandy conducted an extensive regional exploration programme throughout the Randwick area, including stream sediment sampling and initial broad spaced soil sampling on a 500 x 500 metre grid. These programs highlighted several anomalies, which were followed up with either 100 x 100 metre or 200 x 50 metre spaced soil sampling. This sampling in turn confirmed these anomalies, which have yet to be properly drill tested. The effectiveness of the surface geochemistry undertaken by Normandy is questionable, given the colluvial and alluvial cover over the project area. Soil sampling on the eastern side of the project area highlighted one particular area on the boundary of P 37/5787, with a value of 865 ppb gold. A programme of RAB drilling along strike from this sample yielded encouraging results including:
These results prompted a limited follow up RC drilling programme, which generated further results:
This drilling has yet to be properly followed up (see Figure 2.2), and will prove a starting point for Birimian Gold's exploration of the project area. Geological Setting Regional Geology
The Randwick project is located in the Northeastern Goldfields of Western Australia and lies within the northern half of the Minerie 1:100 000 GSWA Map Sheet. The underlying stratigraphy is interpreted to be a sequence of Archaean mafic greenstones, predominantly of basaltic stratigraphy, associated with the eastern limb of the Benalla Anticline. Prospect Geology A veneer of Recent alluvial/colluvial cover on the eastern side of the project gives way to Tertiary colluvium and laterite on the western side of the tenement area, while in the northern project area there is minor outcrop of the underlying mafic units. The extensive cover over the project area masks the geochemical signature of any underlying mineralisation. Mineralisation & Resource Potential The Randwick project is prospective for gold mineralisation. The tenement package contains the historical Queen Mary workings, which were mined between 1897 and 1899 for a total of 40 tonnes @ 31.02 gpt Au (1419 oz). The tenements lie along the northern strike extensions of the structure that hosts the Randwick, Gold Hill and Anglo Saxon mining centres (see Figure 2.1). These mining centres were first established in the early part of the 20th century but have also been the sites of more recent open pit mining operations and have reported insitu resource positions; the details of these operations are not covered by this report, however a small heap leach operation has been run at Gold Hill in recent years, reportedly mining 500,000 tonnes at over 2 gpt Au. The extensions to the Randwick-Anglo Saxon structure require drill testing and will be a priority target for Birimian Gold. |
